Blenheim and Marlborough

Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest wine-producing region and the long hot summers make for wines that are world famous. The long hot summers also make for great beach holidays and, fortunately, this region has among the prettiest beaches in the country – sandy bays nestled against bush-clad hills. There are many more beaches to explore in the Nelson region, northwest of Marlborough.
A short drive south of the Marlborough Sounds, on the sunny Wairau Plains, is Blenheim, the major urban centre of the Marlborough region. The small and friendly town, with a superb climate, good parks and gardens is the gateway to one of the country's finest wine-growing regions. During the second week in February Blenheim hosts the now-famous Marlborough Food and Wine Festival at Montana's Barncott Estate.

Don’t miss:

Wine Region – taste session

Excellent wines are produced in this region: Sauvignon Blanc is the region's specialty, but wines made with Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are also highly acclaimed and are exported all around the world.

Most of the wineries open their doors to the public for wine-tasting sessions. In the course of a wine-tasting session, you will be introduced to the diversity of taste that makes Marlborough wines so fascinating.

Find out which wine goes best with which dish and which occasion and discover lots of fascinating details and aspects of wine.

Queen Charlotte Trail – diverse coastal track

There are plenty of walks around Blenheim, offering expansive views of the town and surrounding areas. But there is one you definitely shouldn’t miss: The Queen Charlotte Track.

The 71 km-long, diverse coastal track is accessed by boat from Picton to its beginning at the scenic reserve of Ship Cove.

The unique aspects of this track are the variety of accommodation available along the track and the water transport services which allow your luggage to be transferred each day, whether you are walking guided or freedom.

Marlborough Sounds - maritime and eco-tour haven

Marlborough Sounds, namely the Queen Charlotte Sound, the Keneperu Sound and the Pelorus Sound, is a flooded valley system where native forest coats the hills right down to the water’s edge.

The sheltered waters are a maritime and eco-tour haven, popular all year round with sailors, hikers, trekkers, mountain bikers, adventure seekers and eco-tourists.
